The Maritime Alps & the GR52 by International Mountain Leader On High Hills-Jonty Mills
The Maritime Alps are the southernmost group in the whole Alpine chain, rising up from the Mediterranean. Straddling the French/Italian border, the whole area bewitches the hiker with its natural charm and breath-taking scenery.
The mountains are Alpine but you can feel that the Mediterranean is never far away. The trails are generally quieter than other Alpine regions, the sunshine warm and relaxation assured.
How easy is it to get to?
It is straightforward. For the French side you can fly or catch a train to Nice, then public buses run up into the mountains.
Can you tell us about the most memorable moment of a recent trip?
Waking up one morning to find the local marmots had managed to open the zip of my rucksack, and make off with my prized possession – chorizo!

What are you top tips for anyone travelling to this area?
In summer the weather can be hot so start your day early to avoid being caught by afternoon thunderstorms. If you enjoy wild flowers the Maritime Alps are a real treat; early summer gives the best display.
What else is there to do, other than mountaineering, in this area?
Lovers of history should not miss the amazing engravings in the Vallée des Merveilles; they date back to the Bronze Age. For those needing to relax tired muscles or minds, the beaches of the French Riviera are not far away…
Are there any dangers or annoyances here?
No more so than any Alpine trekking destination. That said, wolves do live in these hills, but you’re highly unlikely to be lucky enough to see any!

What one piece of kit could you not manage without on a trip like this?
Sun cream! Being the southernmost of the French Alpine regions means a lot of glorious weather.
