About BAIML

The Purpose of BAIML is:

  • To maintain a suitably qualified and competent corps of International Mountain Leaders (IML) and to promote a high standard of professional service for the clientele in order to promote safety, enjoyment, and good practice in the mountain environment;
  • To provide awareness of the need for conservation, protection and appreciation of the countryside and mountain environment;
  • To provide an opportunity for members to meet and familiarise themselves with new equipment, techniques, and current practices in mountain and wilderness travel;
  • To act on behalf of and in the interests of all members;
  • To strengthen ties with fellow International Mountain Leaders or their equivalent worldwide;
  • To liaise with and take a part in fostering the works of other bodies having a mutual interest and concern with mountaineering and mountain training.

BAIML Internationally

BAIML represents the UK and Ireland at UIMLA, the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations, which is an international governing body for International Mountain Leaders. BAIML works closely with UIMLA to develop and promote a worldwide standard for training and assessment.

BAIML at home

BAIML represents its members who either hold the full IML carnet or are working towards it, and the number continues to grow each year. It has its place alongside the other professional mountaineering associations and governing bodies in the UK, British Mountain Guides (BMG), Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI), the British Mountaineering Council (BMC), Mountain Training UK & Ireland (MTUKI) and others.

Like all professional bodies, our members are required to undertake continuing professional development (CPD) and meet our high standards of personal and professional behaviour. To be full members, and issued with the prestigious UIMLA carnet, members have suitable insurance and first aid qualifications appropriate to the environments where they choose to work.

Register of members

BAIML maintains a register of members. This can be used to find a qualified leader or check the credentials of anyone offering services as an IML.
